The Bakhtiari tribe are one of the oldest and most famous tribes in Persia. Their villages are situated to the south-east of Isfahan and have been weaving rugs for export since the early 19th century. Based on a cotton foundation these carpets are generally crafted using the wool taken from the tribe’s own herd, therefore the quality and sheen can differ from carpet to carpet depending on the village of origin. Many consider Bakhtiari to be similar to their Lori counterparts, colors used vary but various tones of reds and browns are common as well as ivory with blue very rarely found. Bakhtiari rugs display a floral, garden pattern. As with most tribal rugs it is difficult to find large examples, most Bakhtiari rugs are around 1.5 x 2.2m however there are small numbers of larger (4 x 5m) and some narrow runners to be found. Knot density can vary from quite coarse to medium-fine.
